Put Off
- Series: Now I Walk
Paul tells the Ephesian church, in Eph. 4:17-19, that they must not live like the unbelieving Gentiles. Today, we still are battling to put off our flesh and sin.
There’s a right way to kill our sin and a wrong way, and Pastor Hayden distinguishes the two. Our bent is toward sin, and we still have indwelling sin, so we must be vigilant in our dependence on God.
Pastor Hayden uses the scope of scripture to show us how we deceive ourselves with self-esteem boosters, lengthy rules and psychoanalysis. Instead, Hayden also points to the different ways we can put off sin biblically:
- Pray for God to reveal sin and give you the power and focus to root it out.
- Identify sin as sin, not as a mistake or a problem. Name your sin. If it’s pride, call it pride. If it’s lying, call it lying.
- Take radical steps to put off sin.
- Invite a trusted friend to help.

The New Life
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
